Juan
When Juan joined as a Member three years ago, he only felt comfortable speaking in Spanish. As our bilingual staff got to know him, they worked with Juan to increase his comfort with English, so we could support his employment, educational, and social goals. Juan began attending our School program and made significant gains in reading, writing, and speaking English. His biggest goal was to get a paid job, so he could help support his family. After a year of Vocational training, he became an apprentice in our Custodial Program, and within six months, he was interviewed and hired as a paid Custodian.
Soon after beginning his job, Juan had to take several months off to undergo a series of surgeries, through which we supported him and his family. This included answering medical questions doctors weren’t answering, and having Staff and Members call and write cards weekly to prevent depression during months of bed rest. Juan would respond to every card, which kept him feeling connected and allowed him to practice his new reading and writing skills, so he wouldn’t lose them while away. Juan is now back at work and school and thriving in Dance, Art, Cooking, and Music Therapy.
Juan’s experiences illustrate the wrap-around support we provide, and how we customize this support according to each Members’ needs and goals.
